Chairman of Collin County Democratic party resigns
By Heather M. Smith, Staff writer
On June 24 at the monthly Executive Committee meeting, Daniel Dodd announced his resignation as the chairman of the Democratic Party of Collin County. He cited ill health as the reason for his decision.
“I felt that I could no longer carry the party on at full steam ahead like I was before,” Dodd said. “I want to turn over the reins to someone who can carry our vision forward, building our Democratic party to win local and state-wide elections in 2010.”
Earlier this month, Dodd spent five days in a McKinney hospital due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right leg and a pulmonary embolism. Dodd said he has a six-inch clot in his right leg. He said the prognosis is good, but his treatment will take six to 12 months.
Dodd took his position as chairman in 2007. Since then he said he enjoyed working within the party at the national, state and county levels. Dodd said he would gladly do it all over again. His resignation is effective June 30. He said he is resigning in order “to allow someone else to carry the party to the next level.”
Dodd said he is very proud of what the party has accomplished recently. He said the party recovered financially from “imminent bankruptcy” in one Excommeeting. It also established an ACH Bank Draft Account for recurring low-cost bank draft donations. Also during Dodd’s reign, the party moved into a Plano storefront that they feel allows for greater visibility.
In 2008 the Collin County Democratic Party was part of the second largest Democratic convention in Texas. It also initiated and hosted two Ann Richard’s dinners to max capacity. In the same year, the Democratic Party registered a record number of new Collin County voters and outvoted Republicans in the 2008 primary.
“None of these successes would be possible without the support of our dedicated volunteers,” Dodd said.
In the future, Dodd said he would still be involved with the party, but on a much smaller scale. Marlene Byndon, the party’s assistant county chairwoman, will be the acting party chairwoman in the interim. During the next meeting of the party, they will elect the next party head per Texas Election Law.
At the conclusion of Dodd’s resignation speech, he left the party with his ideas for a qualified chairperson. He said that person needs to have vision to take the party to the next level, they need to be a good leader and a good follower and they should be able to devote their full time to managing the party. Dodd said they should also look for someone who is well organized, trustworthy, has integrity and has experience.
