Firefighters hospitalized after fighting fire
By Stephanie Flemmons, Staff Writer
Two Plano firefighters were transported to a local hospital for heat exhaustion they sustained after fighting a fire in West Plano.
Both firefighters were treated and released within a few hours.
Peggy Harrell, Plano fire spokeswoman, said the fire in the 4,000-square-foot home was considered under control after the firefighters fought the fire for 30 minutes. The two men were inside looking for hot spots when they both suffered from heat exhaustion.
When crews arrived at the home on Myrtle Beach, about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, it was fully involved in flames. Harrell said neighbors told crews that the homeowners were out of town.
“With them not being there is why the fire had reached such a high level,” Harrell said. “It takes the fire reaching the outside before it is reported.”
Harrell said the home and all its contents are considered a total loss.
Fire investigators are currently trying to determine how the fire started.
