School is out, temperatures are up, and Mesquite has a new theater to cool off in and watch blockbuster movies larger than life this summer.
An IMAX theater opened at AMC Mesquite 30 on March 6 with the movie “Watchmen,” and the highly anticipated sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opened the summer season Wednesday. Other big hits planned to hit the IMAX screen this year include “Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince” and “Avatar.”
IMAX theaters are different from regular theaters because they place a larger curved screen closer to the audience. They also use an advanced sound system and digital projectors.
Several IMAX movies are in 3D or partially in 3D, such as the upcoming Harry Potter film, which includes 3D scenes during the first 12 minutes. Area boy and girl scouts experienced 3D firsthand during a pre-screening of “Space Station” on Saturday in Mesquite.
While IMAX theaters were at one time known for showing documentaries, recent expansions have led to agreements with major Hollywood studios to show major motion pictures.
“We used to battle to get the attention of major Hollywood studios … but today it’s the reverse,” Jephcott said.
Just months after the IMAX opening in Mesquite, another IMAX opened Wednesday on the east side of the Metroplex at AMC Firewheel 18 in Garland. Previously residents in the east Dallas area had to travel to north Dallas or Colleyville to view an IMAX film.
“Fortunately with our new digital projection system, we can now make [IMAX movies] more accessible to more people in communities like Mesquite, who are now able to travel to their local multiplex and enjoy more of these Hollywood blockbusters,” Jephcott said.
In honor of the release of Transformers, the Mesquite and Garland IMAX theaters are conducting a food drive to benefit Salvation Army food pantries. Moviegoers who bring two or more non-perishable items to the theater between 4 and 8 p.m. on Saturday will be eligible to win free movie passes for one year. Boy Scouts will be on hand to collect the donations.
Tickets for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” at the Mesquite IMAX theater range from $10.50 for children to $13.50 for adults at peak show times. Visit www.IMAX.com for information. The Mesquite theater is at 11919 LBJ Fwy.; the Garland theater is at 100 Coneflower Drive.
