Woman, 98, remembers life in Lewisville in the ‘50s

Published: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 5:41 PM CDT
The population of Lewisville was 1,516 when Juanita Stubblefield and her family moved here in 1951.

“The only paved street in town was Highway 77,” she said.

The woman, with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face, recalled her earlier years in Lewisville as she celebrated her 98th birthday Monday with family and friends at her home on Yale Street, just east of Interstate 35 and a few blocks south of Fox Avenue.

She is among a small percentage of current local residents who experienced life in the 1950s in the small town of Lewisville.

She was born in Celina July 27, 1911, and grew up in that area. She and her husband Haskell, and their two sons, Ben and Scott, lived in Dallas for a while before moving to Lewisville.

“At first, we lived in Buttermilk Flats,” she said, explaining that was on the east side of the city where those not-so-wealthy lived.

“The more well to-do lived on Sweet Milk Hill,” she said.

In the 1950s and early 60s, her husband continued to work in Dallas. He loved to fish. Tragically, one night in 1964 he did not come home after fishing from a boat in Lewisville Lake. He had drowned at age 54.

His widow worked at Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas, and later Billie’s Fashions, a dress shop in what is now called Old Town. She never remarried.

She later worked at Lorraine’s Dress Shop on the west side of the city. As a seamstress, she has done alterations for many people in Lewisville over the years, either at a shop or in her home.

Over several decades, she saw Lewisville evolve into a large city, now with a population of about 100,000 people. She also saw her church evolve.

“I remember going to First Baptist Church when it was at Church Street and Charles Street,” she said. Later, First Baptist moved one block south, to Main and Charles. About 10 years ago, First Baptist moved Valley Ridge Boulevard.

She continued to be active in church until a few years ago when she had to stop driving, although she has a current driver’s license. She is part of the church’s homebound program, and is visited frequently by ladies from her church.

Asked if she has any secrets for living a long life, her only response was, “God has been with me.”
