Volleyball: Marcus sweeps way into championship bracket
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
The Lady Marauders volleyball team made quick work of its competition Friday, sweeping its way into the championship bracket at the Texas Open in Allen.
Marcus (9-3) dropped only one game in four matches.
“I thought we played OK,” said Christie Liles, coach of Marcus. “We had some ups and downs. But we did what we wanted to do when we came here and that’s reach the championship bracket.”
Marcus, competing in Division 4, opened the tournament by defeating Sachse, 25-23, 25-17, before taking on Arlington Martin in its tightest match of the day.
Marcus lost a hard-fought opening game, 29-30, before rebounding to take the next two, 25-20, 25-18.
The Lady Marauders closed out pool play by topping Centennial, 25-10, 25-20.
Marcus then defeated Wylie, the fourth-place team from Division 5, 25-7, 25-18, in a crossover match to qualify for the championship bracket.
Liles said Haley Neisler, who was named to the all-tournament team last weekend in Duncanville, continues to play well, as did Lauren Douglass and Mary Koehler.
“Douglass is hitting the ball hard and being very aggressive,” she said. “And Mary had five consecutive aces against Wylie. I don’t remember that happening very often."
