Volleyball: Marcus falls in bronze finals
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
After sweeping its way into the championship bracket Friday at the Texas Open in Allen, Marcus’ volleyball team didn’t play fundamentally sound volleyball on Saturday.
As a result, the Lady Marauders went 2-2, including a loss in the bronze medal finals against 6-5A foe Southlake Carroll.
“We just didn’t play very well at all,” said Christie Liles, Marcus coach. “We made the same mistakes we wanted to work on after the Duncanville Tournament (Aug. 14-15). We didn’t finish and were very inconsistent. You can’t give your opponent 10 to 15 points on your own errors and expect to win.”
“The first game (West) we just didn’t show up to the gym,” Liles said. “But we played better in the second game. Our setters moved the ball around much better and we were serving much more aggressively.”
Marcus followed with its second win of the day, defeating Frisco Centennial, 25-23, 23-16.
However, Marcus was unable to carry the momentum into the bronze finals against Southlake Carroll, falling, 25-22, 25-20.
Marcus continues non-district play Thursday-Saturday at the Nike Invitational Tournament in Pearland.
