Volleyball: Marcus beats Justin Northwest with ease

Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 11:47 PM CST
FLOWER MOUND — From the opening tip-off, it was apparent that Marcus’ volleyball team had an advantage in the middle of the court in their bi-district round playoff match against Justin Northwest.

And the Lady Marauders took advantage throughout the match as Lauren Douglass and Haley Neisler — benefitting from the passing of Mallori Sando and Sarah Hula — had 12 and 10 assists, respectively, to lead the Lady Marauders past the Lady Texans in convincing fashion Tuesday, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16, in a match played at Flower Mound High School.

“It feels awesome,” Neisler said, speaking of Marcus getting a playoff win under their belt. “At the beginning of the season, everything was shaky and unsure for us. But we came out and played well and it feels great. I think we played well all around and we need to keep focusing on playing as a team and helping each other out.”

The win advances Marcus (26-18, 6-4 in 6-5A) to the area round of the playoffs where the Lady Marauders will face Plano (17-21, 5-5 in 8-5A). The Lady Wildcats, who finished fourth in their district, topped Duncanville in their bi-district round match.

“I think it was a good match to get the dust and cobwebs off,” said Christie Liles, Marcus coach. “We had a week-long break after district. Now we have to get going and I think we’ll be a lot better next week.”

Marcus took control from the jump, grabbing five of the first six points.

Later in Game 1, with the Lady Marauders leading, 17-12, Marcus went on a seven-point spurt behind the service of Hula — who had a pair of aces in the run — and a pair of kills by Bailey Bunting, to increase the lead to 24-12.

Marcus used a scoring run in Game 2 to create separation as well. The Lady Marauders led, 17-14, before taking seven of the following eight points to extend their lead to 23-17. Marcus benefitted from multiple Lady Texan hitting errors during the run.

Game 3 was all Marcus as well, as the Lady Marauders outscored Northwest, 20-9, after the game was knotted, 5-5, early. Douglass had two block kills during the streak, while Neisler, Katie Neisler and Elizabeth Fortado all contributed kills during the spurt. Sando set up the Lady Marauder swingers with easy kill chances as Marcus won eight of the last 10 points.

“Our middles really took advantage of their chances and did a great job,” Liles said. “And I thought we passed the ball really well.”

If Marcus had a flaw in the match, it was with closing out Northwest.

The Lady Marauders saw a 12-point lead in Game 1 shrink to seven points before winning as well as a six-point lead cut to two late in Game 2 and a six-point lead cut to three midway through Game 3.

“I thought we played really great at times but I think we kind of sat on our heels a little bit,” Liles said. “We relaxed a little but that’s OK. That was a good first round of the playoffs and now we have to keep moving on.”
