Finally, McKinney’s Twin Peaks Opens

Published: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 6:25 PM CST
If you are looking for a man, you can find a large and diversified collection of them at 2901 S. Central Expressway and Eldorado Parkway from 11 a.m.. to closing.

I’m pretty sure they are there for the food, sports, and beer. But there’s more. With the stone and log cabin lodge type décor, the scenery would make any high mountain lumberjack feel at home.

I’m also fairly sure this sports bar/restaurant gets its name from some famous mountains near logging communities. Just a guess!

Owners Nick and Chris have transformed the former Ruby Tuesday's into the newest of 11 area Twin Peaks, which originated in Lewisville. This one is the second franchised unit, and it has generated huge excitement since the remodel began in July.

More than 500 applied for the kitchen jobs and another 500 applied to wear the Red & Black Plaid ‘Daisy Duke’ tops, khaki hip hugging shorts, and lumber jack boots. The apparel is so appealing; one couple requested the uniform for themselves! It looked great on the wife so the husband graciously allowed the purchase.

After an extensive interview process, 45 lucky fellows were hired for the kitchen details. Those left behind would gladly wash dishes to be part of this team!

Among a bevy of beauties, 55 local sweet hearts donned the Plaid. They were hired for their personalities. Really! That’s 100 new jobs for McKinney.

TRAINING PAYS

Pamela Fredrick, the equally lovely and personable General Manager, reflects: “People have been coming to the doors for months since the signs went up and the parking lots began to fill. They were filled with the 1,000 applicants and then, for the last 45 days they were filled with trainees. We knew we would get slammed!”

And they were! Shortly after 4 p.m. the seats were filling for the unadvertised soft opening. They stayed full up to 11 p.m. By then, the Yankees had put away the Angels and all was well.

On Sept. 10th, the selected ladies were handed over to the General Manager and Corporate Trainer Meggie Miller. It might have looked like a Cowboys cheerleader camp. A month and a half later, the results are evident. Forget the haughty, in-your-face attitude of other sports bar concepts. These young ladies exhibit a wholesome girl next door friendliness that makes TP McKinney a family safe environment. Kids eat free till 4 on Saturdays and Sundays.

WHAT TO EAT

Barbequed Ribs, a Flat Iron Steak, or the huge Twin Peaks Sampler top the menu at $15.99. The Nacho’s, Man Sized Cheeseburger, and Enhanced Chicken Breast are seriously oversized. But I bit off more than I could chew and ordered the massive 7 x 14 Chicken fried steak dinner for $9.99 after an appetizer. Lunch tomorrow! But not before an appetizer.

My first high school job was at the Sunray Feedlot. On my first day, I helped to ‘Doctor’ cattle. This included branding, dehorning, and castration.

As is a cowboy ritual and much to my dismay, the old hands fried them up on the spot after our work was done. I probably would not have tried them had I not wanted to ‘fit in’, but I have been a fan ever since. On the menu, they are Mountain Oysters.

Ladies, take your revenge! This appetizer is perfect.

I am surprised that one of those dishes isn’t the favorite. That distinction goes to the plate of Steak Sliders. Maybe next time.

BLIZZARD BEER?

It is a specialized system that delivers draft beer at 29 degrees into a frosted mug. Wear gloves!

You can test drive this system with a Coors Original Draft for 99 cents from 2 to 7 and again from 10 to 11 every day. Another specialty is the Shot-ski. Four shots of your choice of liquors are mounted evenly across a long snow ski. With the help of staff, the ski is lifted and tilted into four open mouths for even distribution. They made me do it, but it’s nice to feel like part of a team once in a while.

SPORTS ANYONE?

I watched the Yankees take out the Angels on several of the well placed 65” HD Plasma TV’s. This is much better than the smaller and less clear tubes of my former game day hangouts.

Isn’t technology wonderful! Finally, I can see!

They will be great for Fight Night Saturdays when the Ultimate in fighting, the UFC is featured. I am assured by management that all Texas Tech games will be shown on at least one screen. The one in front of me! Never fear, there are 17 other screens for the other games.

THE FINISH LINE

I didn’t have the Twin Peaks Sundae with strategically placed cherries on top of two mounds of ice cream. Maybe that’s where they got their name! Instead, I had the down home Peach Cobbler and aided the friend who forced me to come to this opening with his Bread Pudding Ala Mode. I guess I should thank Juan Carlos of Entertainment Photos again. Of course, you can always appreciate the fourth dessert on the menu at No Charge. They named it the Scenic View.

As a Texas Tech fan, I give McKinney’s Twin Peaks a ‘Guns Up!'
