Rowlett and Sachse took the field on Friday night in the biggest game in the rivalry’s young history as a playoff berth was on the line.
Both teams left everything on the field, but in the end, the Eagles had just a little bit more, as they held on for a 31-28 victory at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Sachse made a gallant charge late to get back to within a field goal with six-and-a-half minutes left, but its offense never got another chance, as Rowlett was able to move the chains on a time-consuming drive and run out the clock.
“It was a good game, they have a very good football team and they played tough,” Rowlett head coach Kiff Hardin said. “We were able to get out on them 31-14, but they came back and fortunately, we were able to get the ball back and keep it and not give them another chance.”
Sachse (4-5) finishes the season with a 4-5 record, but showed just how far the program has come.
The Mustangs had never been in playoff contention going into the last game of the season but were nearly able to capture the first postseason berth in school history.
Sachse actually held the overall edge in total yardage (325-256) but was despite a strong comeback run late, was unable to overcome the 31-14 lead that the Eagles had built.
Treyvon Green rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns to pace Rowlett and give them the early advantage. David Wesley rushed for 100 yards for Sachse. Henry Hunter ran for only 38 yards, but he did have three touchdown runs, including a pair in the second half to give the Mustangs a chance.
The game started off as a shootout, with the teams combining for 35 points in the first quarter
Sachse set the tone early, marching down the field and taking a 7-0 lead when Hunter hit Brandon Lowey on a 30-yard scoring strike.
Rowlett answered immediately, as Tyler Chase returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to tie the game.
The Mustangs retook the lead at 14-7 when Hunter scored on a 7-yard run, but it was all Eagles during the middle stages of the game.
Green scored on runs of 10 and 5 yards to give Rowlett a 21-14 lead after one quarter of play. Green added a 20-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make it 28-14 at halftime.
The Eagles opened the second half in similar fashion as Chase Thrasher kicked a 31-yard field goal to put them in firm control at 31-14, but Sachse was not done.
The Mustang defense stepped up and did not allow another point, giving the offense an opening to make a comeback.
Sachse almost did just that. Hunter scored on a 5-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to close to within 31-21.
In the fourth quarter, Hunter added a 13-yard scoring run to close the gap to three, but Rowlett was able to play keep away in the final minutes to prevent the Mustangs from getting a final chance to complete the come-from-behind win.
