A high-speed chase came to a halt when the suspect fleeing from police lost control and crashed into a tree.
Allen police detained David Montelongo, 27, of Allen, in Plano and charged him with multiple felonies and misdemeanors.
The pursuit began about 10:45 p.m. Thursday in Allen when police recognized the driver as a man wanted on outstanding felony warrants. Shaw said police initiated a traffic stop and Montelongo pulled to the shoulder and stopped his vehicle in the 800 block of U.S. 75. When police attempted to initiate contact with the driver, the suspect disregarded the officers and sped away in his vehicle, Shaw said.
Officers were able to follow close behind, and the chase ended after about a five-minute pursuit when Montelongo crashed into the tree. Montelongo then attempted to flee on foot.
"He crashed and ran about two streets north and was found lying down in someone's backyard," Shaw said. "Once he heard the K-9 dogs he surrendered."
When the pursuit came to rest, police searched the suspect's vehicle and found it was stolen from an apartment complex in Plano in August 2009. Police recovered narcotics from inside the vehicle and logged them into evidence.
Montelongo was charged with evading arrest, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, unauthorized use of a vehicle and a parole violation, which does not carry a bond.
He is currently in custody at the Collin County Detention Center.
No one sustained injuries during the incident.
