Mover and Shaker

Full name: Candace Craig Nelson
Nicknames you were called by your family: Candy
Job title: Founder and Executive Pastry Chef, Sprinkles Cupcakes
Worst part of the job: That we do not have a Sprinkles in every market because we have requests from our customers in every city and hate to disappoint our fans!
Birth date: May 8
Place born: Jakarta, Indonesia
States lived in: So many! California, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, North Carolina
Favorite state? California
Why? I’ve lived around the world, but Southern California just feels like home!
What brings you to Plano? A personal appearance at Neiman Marcus Willow Bend.
I had the privilege to serve as the guest speaker for the Neiman Marcus “Top Ten Women of Collin County” event. It was a delight to meet the ten honorees who are all making such a positive difference in this community. Everyone was warm, wonderful and welcoming.
Number of cups of coffee you consume a day: Oh, I’m so busted. Three, typically.
Favorite breakfast food: A croissant, best eaten in Paris of course!
Favorite food: No surprise here… cupcakes. Right now I’m looking forward to our almond dark chocolate cupcakes.
What time do you wake up in the morning? Depends on when my toddler wakes up!
What time do you go to sleep: 11 p.m. I’m a night owl, but I always regret it in the morning!
Radio or CDs in the car? CDs
Favorite band/singer: Jamiroquai. A little funk, a little pop. Always a great, upbeat vibe.
Do you own an iPod? Yes
Something I’m known for: Being a little bit gullible!
Something nobody knows about you: I’m addicted to the show, “So You Think You Can Dance!” It is pure fun!
Dogs or cats? Dogs
Favorite kind of dog? Norwich terrier, like “Winky” from the movie Best in Show. My Norwich’s name is Honey.
What was the name of your favorite childhood pet? Harry, the long haired guinea pig. He needed to be groomed daily to prevent snarls in his hair, which I did without fail. He was high maintenance and fabulous!
What is the last book you read? “Outliers,” by Malcolm Gladwell. Fascinating!
Why did you decide to open a “cupcakes only” bakery? I wanted to do something I was passionate about and something that would make people happy. I wanted to create a special place where someone could take their friend or child and create a special memory. I could never have imagined the amazing response we received.
Tell us a few of the celebrities that love Sprinkles cupcakes? Oprah Winfrey, Katie Holmes, Blake Lively, Tyra Banks, Victoria Beckham, Heidi Klum
What is the #1 Sprinkles cupcake? Red velvet
Tell us something new that is happening with Sprinkles Cupcakes. To celebrate the start of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2009 season, Sprinkles will launch a limited-time “Blue Velvet” cupcake topped with rich cream cheese frosting and a blue star sugar decoration. Sept. 12 through Sept. 19, when devoted Cowboys fans purchase a Sprinkles Blue Velvet cupcake, 100 percent of each purchase will be donated to The Salvation Army. To add to the excitement, each day of the promotion one Blue Velvet cupcake will have a silver star hidden inside. The recipient of this special Blue Velvet cupcake will become one of eight daily “Touchdown” winners and will be entitled to one dozen Blue Velvet cupcakes, a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the new Cowboys Stadium for two, one Cowboys ball cap and one Cowboys t-shirt. Each “Touchdown” daily winner’s name will go into a drawing for one “MVP” grand prize. The “MVP” winner will receive four tickets to the Thanksgiving Day game on Nov. 26, where they will see The Salvation Army’s National Red Kettle Kickoff, which is hosted by the Cowboys each year on Thanksgiving Day; a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the new Cowboys Stadium for four; an opportunity for four to attend the private rehearsal of the Thanksgiving Day game half-time talent (to be confirmed) on Nov. 25; four Cowboys jerseys and one authentic football autographed by Cowboys Owner and General Manager, Jerry Jones, and Head Coach Wade Phillips.
Also, from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 12, the littlest Cowboys fans will have a chance to meet Rowdy, the Dallas Cowboys mascot, at Sprinkles inside The Plaza at Preston Center. He’ll sign autographs and pose for photos with kids and their new favorite treat - a Blue Velvet cupcake!
We are so excited about our “Say It With Sprinkles” message boxes that just launched as well. Customers can go online anytime and order dozen boxes of cupcakes with custom message boxes to spell out their sentiments with cupcakes. From birthdays to breakups to weddings and more, we have every option to send the perfect message to someone special.
