Frisco welcomes Texas Supreme Court Justice

Published: Monday, December 28, 2009 5:58 AM CST
Justice Eva Guzman, who hails from Houston, is the first Latina woman appointed to the highest civil court in the state by Governor Rick Perry. A breakfast in her honor was hosted by the Conservative Hispanic Society and the Frisco law firm of Mackoy, Hernandez and Qualls at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco last week.

“Justice Guzman is one of the most highly respected female attorneys in the State and is known throughout the legal circles as a fair and impartial jurist, with an unmatched work ethic,” Frisco attorney Terri Green told the early morning crowd.. “She has risen to the top of the legal profession in record time, going from practicing as a family law attorney to being appointed as a jurist to the highest court in the state in less than 11 years.”

Guzman, no stranger to appointments, was first appointed by Governor George Bush in l999 to the 309th State District Court bench in Harris County, followed by an appointment to the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston by current Governor Rick Perry, to most recently the Texas Supreme Court in October, 2009.

As Guzman thanked the crowd for their attendance, she noted, “It is truly an honor to be appointed and I am very grateful for the confidence Governor Perry has shown in me. Collin County has welcomed me with open arms with their hospitality and I look forward to serving all of you as your next Supreme Court Justice.”

Guzman received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and her law degree from South Texas College of Law in l989. Since Guzman was appointed to the fill the unexpired term of Justice Scott Brister, she will appear on the March 2010 primary ballot as the Republican incumbent.
