‘Salonathon’ to benefit area shelters

Kimberly Sauls
By BLAINE CRIMMINS, Staff writer
The holidays may be over but the inspiration for helping others carries on in the heart of one local business owner.
Kimberly Sauls, owner of New Growth Hair Studio in The Colony, said she was moved by Toys-for-Tots and other charitable fund-raisers taking place in December, so she decided to spearhead a charity event of her own to help those less fortunate.
“I kept thinking it has to be something different and something no one has done before,” she said. “Then it hit me.”
New Growth has been involved in charitable work before, offering free services to victims of Hurricane Katrina who might be looking for jobs or simply in need of feeling good about themselves with a fresh hair style.
As then, Sauls said the reason for doing the Salonathon is all about helping others.
“Sometimes we tend to take for granted how blessed we truly are and that there are less fortunate people that need help,” she said. “Our main goal for doing the Salonathon is to give something back to our community that we have lived in for years and our children have grown up in.”
Sauls said she hopes the event can grow every year, involve more stylists and salons, and help more shelters with different drives throughout the year.
“All we want is to make somebody's day brighter. We are blessed and want to be a blessing to someone else,” she said.
Sauls was a resident of The Colony for seven years before moving to Little Elm in 2006. New Growth Hair Studio, 4750 South Colony Blvd., has been in business in The Colony since 1997. For information, call 214-469-1600.
