Mack Brown fails to seal the deal with Jeffcoat; Oklahoma on the horizon?

Published: Friday, January 22, 2010 3:39 PM CST
So, my inside source was right about almost everything involving Plano West senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat.

Jeffcoat was indeed visited this week by the head coach of one of his finalists (Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona State and Houston … remember, USC is now out of the picture) and it was infact Longhorns leader Mack Brown as we reported it would be nearly a week ago.

Brown spent a good chunk of his day Wednesday on the West campus, according to Wolves head football coach and West athletic coordinator Mike Hughes. Not only did Brown spend time talking with the leader of the Wolf Pack in Hughes’ office (talking about fishing no doubt), but Brown also circulated throughout the campus and signed autographs for anyone who asked.

This was just a prelude to the real purpose of Brown’s visit as he swung by the Jeffcoat home Wednesday evening to meet with the prized recruit and his family.

I don’t have exact insight on how this meeting went, but my source told me the coach visiting (Brown) would be in town to seal the deal. Well, Brown is no longer in Plano and Jeffcoat has yet to verbally commit to Texas.

Does that mean Texas is out of the picture … hopefully … wait … I mean absolutely not.

In fact, the Longhorns could still very well be the frontrunners. But what should give the Burnt Orange Nation cause for concern is the fact that Jeffcoat will be in Norman this weekend to take his official visit with the Sooners. Jeffcoat won’t be alone either as prized Texas A&M recruit Corey Nelson, a linebacker at Dallas Skyline, will be at Oklahoma this weekend as well.

Oklahoma already has one Jeffcoat in the fold as Jackson’s twin sister Jacqueline committed to play basketball for the Lady Sooners in the fall. But don’t look for the patriarch of the Jeffcoat family, former Dallas Cowboy Jim, to be joining his daughter in Norman as the elder Jeffcoat will remain a coach at Houston.

But the Sooners may still be able to pull in another Jeffcoat.

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops has been watching Jackson for some time; he was at Allen’s Eagle Stadium on Sept. 25 to watch the West-Allen game. At least he was there for the first half of the game as Allen was in the midst of thrashing West, 55-6, and Stoops didn’t stick around the second half.

So … the big question is … when will Jeffcoat’s announcement come?

Fox 4 sports executive producer Kevin Morrell has tweeted that Jeffcoat will disclose his selection live on the station Jan. 31.

Neat.

Now my contention is of course that Jeffcoat’s decision will already be available via our website by that point.

Think about it. This has been the place for all breaking news on Jeffcoat this season. We were the first to report on Jeffcoat being selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, we were the first to mention his six final school choices, and then five when Florida had been cut from the list, and we were the first to report coach Brown would be in town this week.

And with all due respective to Mr. Morrell, I believe we will be the first place to find out where Jeffcoat will be going to school.

Stay tuned.

" No big loss. Jeffcoat is overrated. If his dad weren't a Cowboys veteran no one would pay attention to the kid. It reminds me a little of Craig James' kid. You know, the one at Tech. "
