Already famous for its success at competitions elsewhere, The Colony High School JROTC program is building a reputation for the scope and quality of its own hometown meet.
For the second year in a row, the JROTC will be hosting the Texas State Championship Skills Meet at The Colony High School. This year’s drill meet is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 20. The event is being conducted in conjunction with American Legion Post No. 21.
“(The Colony) is the school to beat at any meet,” Mayor Joe McCourry said during Tuesday night’s city council meeting. His comments preceded the reading of a proclamation declaring Feb. 20 “JROTC American Legion Texas State Championship Skills Meet Day” in The Colony.
For White, it isn’t so much about the numbers as the fact he’s received commitments from some of the best programs in the country.
“Having a drill meet is not necessarily that big of a deal. What I like about mine is that I got (nearly) every single team that I wanted to compete,” White said. “This is only our second year so that was pretty nice. It was open to anybody but I did go after certain (state and national level) teams.”
Spectators will have more than their fair share of events to absorb. Every facility at the high school will be in use that day, with something for everyone.
“It’s kind of like a track meet. There’s things going all over the high school,” White said.
Parents and adult volunteers handle the concession stands, hospitality, grading, and security. But much of the event’s purpose is about teaching The Colony’s JROTC members about large-scale management.
“The kids run the program. … They have to manage it, get it organized, and get the inspectors ready to go so all these teams come through and get inspected,” White said.
Teams will compete in 12 categories, including Academics, Unarmed Drill, Armed Drill, Male Color guard, Female Color Guard, Physical Training, Ranger Hike, Squad Drill, and Orienteering.
