Fire damages Flower Mound YMCA

The Cross Timbers Family YMCA in Flower Mound was closed Monday following an early-morning fire at the facility.
Flower Mound firefighters received a call at 4:39 a.m. Sunday about a structure fire at the facility.
Fire reports state that when firefighters arrived, they first noticed through a window that a treadmill and a TV monitor were on fire, as well as a portion of a wall. The building was full of smoke. However, the fire was extinguished quickly.
Fire chief Eric Metzger said the fire originated from a treadmill, which had heavy electrical wire damage and arcing on the front of it. The report stated that the metal body of the treadmill was very sharp and its cord had been coiled up and the wire’s insulation had been cut from the constant pounding of the treadmill.
“These were actually fairly new pieces of equipment,” Metzger said. “But sometimes we’ll find that something rubs the insulation off, and unfortunately that happened here this time.”
The TV monitor was also burned since it was mounted above the treadmill.
In addition, a power cord used to plug in the burned treadmill was burned and shorted, causing damage to the electrical outlet and the wall.
Two other treadmills were damaged, and another one was found to have its wheels on top of a cord, which had worn the insulation down to the bare metal as well.
Because of the interior’s complexity and the number of gyms and upstairs workout rooms, multiple fans had to be set up in stages to remove the smoke and high levels of carbon monoxide. The fans had to run for about two hours, the report stated.
Because of the extent of smoke and soot that remained, the YMCA's Risk Manager for decontamination called a fire and smoke restoration company.
The facility is expected to be open tomorrow during normal operating hours.
