Davis Library hosts Chinese Film Festival
By Zach Markovic, zmarkovic@acnpapers.com
With Black History Month, Heart Health Month and - thanks to Valentine's Day - the month of love, February is full of chances to expand one's horizons.
The Plano Public Library offers up a chance this month to appreciate films out of the East. The Chinese Film Festival at Davis Library runs through Feb. 27. The feature films, 2 p.m. on Saturdays, are subtitled in English and are free to the public.
Dong Xiao, an adult services librarian and one of the organizers of the festival, said the film festival began in 1995. Library staff began by contacting the Chinese Embassy in Houston for a list of films to show. Last year they turned to the Confucius Center at the University of Texas at Dallas, which lent them a film to add to the list they received from the embassy.
She said moviegoers should plan on arriving early, as the library has had to turn people away when they fill the library's auditorium.
The remaining films are:
Saturday, Feb. 13: "If You are the One"
(For adults 18 and up) - A self-made entrepreneur, Chin has never had much luck in the love department. He puts out a personal ad on Match.com hoping to find a relationship. After a string of bizarre encounters and bad dates, he finally strikes a chord with the beautiful Xiaoxiao. A story about love in comical situations, it depicts how difficult it often is to find the right person, but also how love often hits at the most unexpected times.
Saturday, Feb. 20: "Forever Enthralled"
(For adults 18 and up) - A biographical account of Mei Lanfang, China's greatest opera star. Descended from an acting family, Mei's popularity soon made him a rival to veteran actor Swallow 13. The two face off in a musical "duel" from which Mei emerges the victor. As his fame spreads into the late 1920s, he even performs on Broadway, but disaster sets in with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. Mei's refusal to sing in public under the occupation proves career-threatening.
Saturday, Feb. 27: "Pleasant Goat and Big, Big Wolf"
(For all ages) - Based on the animated TV series for children by the same name, the story of the clash between Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf continues this time in the land of snails. The film tells a hilarious story of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf, who this time face the same enemy: bacteria. With a joint effort, they defeat the enemy and become friends.
