Plano Metro Rotary Club’s 21st annual Mardi Gras Casino Night
By Kim Nguyen, knguyen@acnpapers.com
The fun and fanfare of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is coming to Plano on Feb. 27 with the Plano Metro Rotary Club’s 23rd annual Mardi Gras Casino Night.
The event is open to the public, and the money raised will help provide for PMRC’s various activities and service projects over the course of the year, including scholarships to graduating Plano ISD students who otherwise might not have the opportunity to go to college, said Stephen Parry, club president.
“The majority of our efforts are directed toward students, and we try to focus on kids that may be in a bad situation that deserve to go (to college) but can’t make it happen on their own,” he said. “Entities give scholarships to valedictorians and high-performing students and tend to forget the rest. We’re trying to help the students that don’t have the ability to go to college to do that.”
“One of the projects that came up unexpectedly was the Shelter Box project, which helps us provide ongoing relief to victims of the Haiti earthquake,” he said. “It wasn’t on our original list of objectives, but it became one once we saw the destruction. We want to make an impact on as many different places as we can.”
Every dollar raised goes to various services and organizations the PMRC supports, and without the support of the community, the club would not be able to continue, Parry said.
“When someone helps us with our projects, the citizens of the community can feel that they are participating in helping Plano ISD graduates go to college, providing a roof for Haitians who lost everything and providing wheelchairs for the medically disabled in Mexico,” he said. “It’s allowing local citizens to do the right thing by their community, state, country and world.”
Aside from playing craps, roulette, blackjack, Texas Hold’em and slot machines, Casino Night attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase items in a silent and a live auction.
Prizes up for auction include a charcoal grill, a flat-screen TV, a dinner for 10 provided by a caterer, a trip for two to The Masters Golf Tournament plus one day of hospitality at the famous 1018 Club, a Troy Aikman autographed football and other sports memorabilia, state and nation flags flown over the capitals, Central Market cooking school lessons, wine tasting classes, a spa getaway and a Gleneagles Country Club membership.
The Plano Metro Rotary Club’s 23rd annual Mardi Gras Casino Night will be from 6:30-11 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Gleneagles Country Club in Plano.
The event is open to the public. Tickets at the door are $50 each, but can be purchased in advance for $40 from any Plano Metro Rotary Club member or online at www.MardiGrasCasinoNight.org. Tickets purchased through the Web site will be held at Will Call. Each ticket will include two drink tickets and hot and cold hors d’oeuvres.
