Ms. Kuang goes to Washington (SLIDESHOW)

Published: Wednesday, March 10, 2010 6:20 AM CST
Three Frisco ISD students placed in the top six in Congressional Art Competition awards handed out Saturday by Cong. Sam Johnson, Texas-3d. Johnson told a crowd gathered in Frisco that 53 students in the Third Congressional District participated, with the winner being Cindy Kuang, of McKinney, 17, a senior at Liberty High School. Johnson said Frisco nabbed the awards announcement from McKinney.

“We were going to have this in McKinney,” Johnson told the crowd gathered at the new Next Step Dance Performing Arts Center. “But your mayor said, ‘What’s wrong with Frisco?’ and I said, ‘Nothing,’ so here we are.”

Kuang’s work, titled “The Dancer,” will hang in the White House for one year with winners from other congressional districts throughout the United States.

“I am really excited,” Kuang said. “I didn’t even know about the White House.”

Kuang’s father, Vincent Kuang, said he and her mother, Jie, were delighted to be part of the awards ceremony Saturday during the Arts in the Square festival.

“We are very proud,” Vincent Kuang said. “She has shown such talent from the age of seven years old. She started by painting copies of other painters’ works, and her copies were so good, her teacher put them on the school’s Web site.”

Placing second is Aaron Dekle, of Sachse, a student at Garland Christian Academy. Dekle’s work, “Patriot,” reflects four views of the Alamo.

Placing third is Ashley Chang of Plano, a student at Liberty High School. Chang titled her cityscape “Chinatown.”

“I am really, really happy,” Chang said. “I worked really hard.”

Fourth place went to Saemi Choi, of Frisco, a Centennial High School student. Choi was not present to accept the award for “Let’s Go Sailing.”

Placing fifth is Zarina Karpetyan, of Plano, a student at Plano East Senior High School with “Grapes and Flowers,” and placing sixth is Kelleigh Brill, of Allen, a student at Allen High School with her work, “Texan.”

One of the broadest smiles of all shown from the face of Liberty High School art teacher Pernie Fallon.

“I’m thrilled,” Fallon said. “Awards went to three students enrolled in the art program at Liberty High School.”
