Canright announces run for trustee seat

Maybe fifth time’s the charm for Robert Canright, who announced Monday his intentions to run for the Place 1 seat on the Plano ISD board of trustees.
Canright, who has also run in the school board elections in the last two years, said his determination to be a trustee stems from what he says is a decline of the Plano school district.
“We need to prepare our children for the future and beyond,” he said. “We are in a long-lasting economic downturn and it will take a long, long, long time to get out of the mess we’re in. We need to prepare our children for the difficult times ahead.”
“Our children must be educated in economics, business and finance so they can succeed in the difficult times ahead,” he said. “A perfect example of the mis-education of (Plano ISD students) is the push toward innovation. Our children not only need to know innovation, but also how to turn new products into business.”
As an experienced and certified math and science teacher for three area school districts, Canright said changes are also needed in how Plano ISD teaches math and science courses.
“Information from the TEA (Texas Education Agency) shows that Plano continually scores low performing,” he said. “Richardson, Allen and Frisco all do a better job in educating average students and Title 1 students. Each school in the Richardson school district is rated exemplary or recognized. Why aren’t all of the schools in Plano?”
According to 2009 TEA district ratings, Armstrong Middle School was one of two schools in Collin County to have been rated “academically unacceptable.” Overall, Plano ISD scored acceptable.
“It’s mismanagement and bad leadership,” Canright said. “Now the district is busing students to shuffle them around to dilute and hide the problem. That’s why I keep running year after year. Our kids need a better education for a better future.”
Canright is the founder of the Texas Ascendant Campaign, a road-map to prosperity for children, and the Timeless Way Foundation, a Texas Education think tank. He holds bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Professionally, Canright is a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is a licensed professional engineer. Canright has worked for Fortune 100 companies, solving technical and management problems, and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida.
Canright is a founding member of the McDermott Road Church of Christ, where he is a Sunday school teacher and a worship coordinator. He has been a resident of Plano for 17 years, with one child in Plano schools and another child a graduate of Plano Senior High School.
