Student film to be screened at local theater

A group of local student filmmakers will present their film “Protocol 47” to audiences during two scheduled screenings.
“Protocol 47 is the most ambitious student film to date at MediaTech Institute. This senior-level film class has taken on creating this film in a totally Hollywood style with real schedules, intricate, realistic in-studio sets and working with professional actors,” said Keith Randal Duncan, executive producer and instructor. “The seriousness and intensity of moviemaking professionalism and creativity is definitely evident with the winter 2010 DFP 401 class. I can hardly wait to see it in the theater on the big screen March 18.”
“What’s neat about this screening is that the director is female, which is few and far between in the industry,” said Susan Steely, an employee with MediaTech Institute, which is producing the movie. “On Oscar night the first female won for director and now Valentina (the director of the movie) feels very inspired that she could win an Oscar.”
“Protocol 47” is a character-driven drama starring Stephanie Rhodes, who also played in the 2009 version of “Friday the 13th.” It is directed by Russian-born Valentina Vladi.
“The crew and cast were delights to be around,” Rhodes said. “The intensity of the story takes the audience on a journey ending at the root of human nature, as each character comes face-to-face with the harshness of their own reality.”
The movie centers around a secret nuclear research facility that is testing a new power source when an accident happens. A new type of radiation is created that alters the researchers. Some go mad and attack others; some become depressed and kill themselves. Those in a distant control facility must decide whether the researchers live or whether they invoke “Protocol 47.”
“For ‘Protocol 47’ I wanted to create a new point of view in science fiction that fused action and dramatic elements with a character-driven story,” Vladi said. “The characters were to be real people faced with a grim and incredible situation, and I wanted to show how they each dealt with the situation, some heroically, some with fear and violence. In the end I want the audience to think, ‘what would I have done?”
According to Reynaldo Cortez, the producer of the movie, the students had 11 weeks to complete the project. He said within four weeks they had a script written and shot for 10 days straight.
“We’re really, really excited about this,” Cortez said. “We think it’s going to turn out to be a really good film.”
During the behind-the-scenes film, movie-goers will witness the process in which a narrative entertainment student film comes together, their challenges and triumphs, with insight into the film industry.
“I thoroughly enjoyed working on this production. The cast and crew exhibited a high level of professionalism,” said Wilbur Penn, who plays “The General” in the movie. “And, just as important, Valentina knew exactly what she wanted creatively, yet fostered a wonderful sense of creative collaboration in her directorial style.”
The makers of “Protocol 47” plan to extend the short film into a full-length feature and enter it into festivals.
MediaTech Institute teaches students how to establish a career in the entertainment business. There are locations in Dallas, Houston and Austin.
