Recall affects two area Market Street stores
By Kim Nguyen, knguyen@acnpapers.com
A recent recall by McCormick and Co. Inc. of its Corn Bread Stuffing Mix has affected two of North Texas' Market Street stores. On March 5, McCormick and Co. Inc. issued the recall of products manufactured with hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) due to potential salmonella contamination.
The potentially contaminated HVP ingredient was supplied to McCormick by Basic Food Flavors of Las Vegas and was used to make McCormick French Onion Dip Mix, McCormick Vegetable Dip Mix, McCormick Onion Gravy Mix and McCormick Corn Bread Stuffing.
Recalled products were distributed nationwide and sold in retail stores. Two of the recalled products were also distributed for sale in international markets. Three 42-ounce containers shipped to Market Street locations in either Colleyville or Plano are unaccounted for. They are assumed to have been used in the preparation of products in the stores' meat market, according to Scott Nettles, business director of market/seafood for United Supermarkets, LLC. "All other product shipped to our stores has been accounted for except for these three bottles, so we must assume they have been used," Nettles said in a statement. "It is important to note that no illnesses have been reported to date, and we are taking these actions simply as a precaution." The three containers would have been used in products from the stores' market service counter bearing a "sell-by" date between Feb. 26 and March 14. The stuffing was also used in the preparation of pre-made entrees - stuffed whole fryers, stuffed split chicken breasts and crab-and-shrimp stuffed chicken breasts - sold at the two Market Street stores, Nettles said. Customers of either Market Street store who may have purchased any of those products during the past two weeks is encouraged to check the "sell-by" date and either destroy the item or return it to the store for a full refund. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that consumption of products containing salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms) endocarditis and arthritis.
