Baseball: Cougars lacking experience

Published: Wednesday, March 10, 2010 8:40 PM CST
With just one senior in its starting lineup, The Colony baseball team has been going through some “growing pains” during the non-district season, said coach Martin Dean.

But Tuesday in its District 5-4A opener, The Colony (6-4, 0-1) showed they have the talent to be a factor in the district’s playoff race.

The Cougars lost, 6-5, to Denton Guyer in nine innings.

“I think Guyer is one of the better teams in the district,” Dean said. “So I was proud of the way we showed up and competed. We gave a great effort.”

Matt Dean got the Cougars on the board with a solo homer in the first inning, but Guyer responded with four runs in its half of the inning to take the lead.

The Cougars trailed late into the game, but tied the score in the top of the seventh inning when Dean came in to score on a hit by Kenton Allen. Dean had moved into scoring position after drawing a walk and stealing second.

The Cougars had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, but failed to drive in a run after loading the bases with one out.

“The little things are kind of hurting us right now,” coach Dean said. “But that can be expected of a young team. We have some spurts when we play well and some spurts when we don’t.”

One area of youth is at pitcher, where Dean is the lone returner. But coach Dean thinks it could end up being one of the teams’ strengths.

Other pitchers for The Colony include Jordan Foley, Ken Wallentine and Clint Hall, who will also see time at third base after playing first last season.

“We’re pretty competitive there,” coach Dean said. “Right now, I think our pitching is a little ahead of our hitting.”

One reason for that could be a lack of live hitting because of weather.

“It’s two-fold,” Dean added. “It allows you to get inside and really work on some fundamentals. But we don’t get the live game experience.”

Offensively, the Cougars will look to get runners on base and move them around.

“We’re going to have to play a lot of small-ball,” Dean said. “Do some hit-and-running and things like that.”

The Colony continues at 10 a.m. today against Allen in their first game of the Dr Pepper Tournament of Champions, which is in Frisco.
