Truckloads of trash to descend on waterpark

By BLAINE CRIMMINS, bcrimmins@acnpapers.com
The weather's getting warmer, and the sunlight coming in shows all the dust on your furniture. Ready for some spring cleaning?
In conjunction with Allied Waste Services, the city of The Colony's annual Spring Clean-Up event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 17, in the Hawaiian Falls parking lot. Residents may bring trash and refuse, such as tree limbs, furniture, appliances, lumber, remodeling debris, fencing materials, and scrap metal for disposal and/or recycling.
The city also will be collecting small truck, car, and SUV tires; batteries of all types; and electronics, including computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, CD players, televisions, and copiers. Other services available during Spring Clean-Up include removal of Freon from appliances and bulk shredding. For information, call 972-624-3132.
Between 400 and 500 cars and trucks are likely to roll through the line that morning. Gilman said it's always a popular event because residents like to take advantage of the chance to toss out large, bulk items, in particular. Also, Freon removal can cost up to $70, so many residents take advantage of the free service.
The number of tires a resident may bring is limited to eight. Large truck or tractor tires will be not accepted. The number of televisions and monitors is limited to four per resident.
Liquids and/or chemicals of any kind also will not be accepted. This includes paints and household hazardous waste. Residents may bring those items to the city's Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center at 5576 N. Colony Blvd. near Fire Station No. 2. Call 972-624-3132 for hours of operation or for an appointment.
Entry to the Spring Clean-Up will be from Memorial Drive using the east entrance to Hawaiian Falls. There will be no entry off of Paige Road. Signs will be in place and city staff members will be directing traffic to expedite unloading. No one will be allowed into the line after noon.
Persons under the age of 18 will not be allowed in the unloading area because of safety concerns. All residents will be required to show proof of residency by presenting their utility bill and photo I.D.
Enclosed box vans, trailers over 20 feet and/or contractors will not be allowed into the Spring Clean-Up as the event is for The Colony residents only.
