Daylight Saving Time is a drag

Published: Friday, March 12, 2010 3:40 PM CST
Attention all rabbits. Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour starting at 2 a.m. Sunday or you'll be late for an important date. Yep, it's time to "spring forward." Yippee! Woot!

Blech! Daylight Saving Time bums me out. I'm already running late most of the time, and the thought of losing that hour of sleep is depressing. I enjoy pushing the late-night envelope, especially on weekends. But now my Saturday is tainted by the clock-watching that comes from knowing I'll be rooked out of an hour of fun.

Sure, it's just one hour, and technically we get it back later in the year. But what about the jet lag? That's right, jet lag, defined as the de-synchronisation between various body rhythms and environmental rhythms. Can't be healthy.

Though not standardized, some airlines account for their crew requiring one whole day to recoup for every two hours of timezone shifting. That means we spend half the day on Sunday getting over that one hour difference.

So be sure to drink plenty of fluids this weekend. Get up and walk down the aisles now and again. You might need some sleep aides, too.

I know, it's all worth it later in the summer when we have more sunlight to enjoy the evenings. DST apparently has some theoretical benefit to the environment, too, but I'm not sure I buy into it.

At the end of the day, none of that will matter on Saturday and Sunday when the effects are most acute. I live in the now. Grumble, grouse ...

Before I go, I want to give another shout out to the Cougars for playing hard against Houston Yates last night. The odds were against them, but they made it a game for three quarters. Good on ya, boys!

Also, thanks to those down in Austin who helped me post live updates online throughout the game. It was a blast. I'm looking forward to doing it all again next year when the Cougars make another run.

" I've always thought Daylight Savings Time was ridiculous. What difference does it make. The day is NOT longer. It's merely an illusion. We're all just pretending it's an hour earlier. Silliness, I say. Total silliness. "
