Mover and Shaker: Dera Enochson

Full name: Dera Enochson
Job title: President, Xen-Tan Premium Sunless Tan
How long you’ve been that: Seven years
Favorite part of your job: Working with new formulas and ingredients
Favorite part of your day: We get daily feedback from customers and I write to them myself most days, so it is always good to hear they love the products.
What time do you wake up in the morning? 6:30 a.m.
What time do you go to sleep? 10 p.m.
Name five things that are in your purse: Diapers, iPod, baby chew toy, Amex card, business cards
Favorite clothing designer or place to shop? I do all my shopping online – it’s faster. I love Nordstrom, J. Crew, Neiman Marcus
What is your favorite trend right now? Loose linen tank tops, blazers
Birthday: Sept. 19
Your philosophy on age: We’re all getting older! Accept it, but don’t surrender to it.
Place born: Chicago, Ill.
Are you a youngest, middle or oldest child? Middle child – classic middle child, I was the social one.
What is your favorite childhood memory? We used to go to a dude ranch every year for Christmas. It would be a mix of families from all over the world. We’d eat together at this huge table and ride horses all day long. There were beautiful multicolored Christmas lights everywhere.
Favorite home-cooked meal: My mother-in-law’s lasagna! Perfection.
Favorite dessert: Blue Fish Berry Tower. It is heavenly and it feels light even though it’s sweet.
Vegetable that you won’t touch: Squash. Even the name is unappealing, isn’t it?
The last time that you got all dressed up in evening wear: In my closet a couple weeks ago. I just wanted to know if anything fit yet after the recent baby… and no, it didn’t!
Favorite band when you were 20: The Clash
Favorite band now: Joshua Radin
Last song that you bought: “Tell Her This,” by Del Amitri
Something almost nobody knows about you: I write novels in my spare time. I wrote a vampire novel and it was a runner up in an international writing contest.
Something you’re known for: Being in a good mood. Both my husband and I wake up in a good mood and it takes a lot to bump us out of those moods. If I wake up in a bad mood he makes me laugh in the first 20 minutes and that’s pretty much the end of the bad mood.
What trait do you admire most in others? Self-discipline. With food, work, exercise. I believe self-discipline is the key to happiness. I hope I instill that in my sons. Being able to make yourself do anything you want means being able to make yourself happy. I always do the things I want to do least first thing in the day. Then they are over. I really admire people who push themselves to do better.
What is the best way to get a natural-looking healthy glow without overdoing it for winter? Our Transform Luxe. It is a transparent sunless tan that works on any skin tone. It develops quickly with one use, but you can tan as often as every day so you can deepen it as much as you like. It has a light fresh vanilla scent so it works on men and women. You can put it on in the morning and tan while you go about your day because it doesn’t develop the chemical smell so many people associate with self-tan.
If you could choose only one Xen-Tan product, what would it be? Our newest product: Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe. It is the ultimate rich sunless tan. This was my private stash that I would have the chemist mix up for me because I am naturally so pale and I love a dark tan. It has the deepest color, but it's super smooth. We have a new ingredient (our Scent Secure) that locks out self-tanning odor so you can get really tan and not have the chemical smell. It will launch in March. Its pricey ($56, www.xen-tan.com) but I think it’s more than worth it. If you can’t vacation you can watch the travel channel and use some Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe. It’s a great substitute for a week on the French Riviera. What they say is true – you can’t be too tan (as long as you stay out of the sun to do it).
When do you think is a good time to start going darker as the weather warms up? Here in Plano I think there are usually nice days as early as February. If it is even slightly warm out I just want to eat on the patio at Patrizios. And cute new spring clothes mean you need a tan to show them off.
