Southlake residents will have two new parks to visit when Liberty Park at Sheltonwood and Royal and Annie Smith Park open Friday.

Liberty Park lies on 18 acres of land on East Dove Lane, just east of Ridgecrest Drive. The property was purchased by the city from John Shelton in 1999 and construction began on the park in 2008.

Peter Kao, construction manager for the city, said the park will be developed in two phases. The first phase, which is now complete, features a covered pavilion, pond, bathrooms and open areas where people can play games like Frisbee and flag football.

Kao said he envisions the park being used for family gatherings, church and company picnics as well as for people who just want to get outside and experience a little piece of nature in the middle of the Metroplex.

The second phase of the park will include the construction of hiking trails in the northern -- heavily wood -- part of the park, a children's playground near the pavilion and the completion of the elliptical memorial walk around the pond.

When completed, the memorial walk will feature more than a dozen pieces of advice from Shelton about how to live your life. Advice includes “Be careful in the things you think. Your thoughts control your life.”

Kao said the pavilion is designed to have enough electrical outlets for a performance from a live band. The pavilion also features a large barbecue grill and serving area.

For the most part, the park is landscaped with native grasses, which Kao said was to keep the natural look of the land.

The second park that is opening – Royal and Annie Smith Park – is located at 3001 Johnson Road. The park will span 13 acres and feature a pavilion, playground, walking trails and a new parking lot. Construction of the park also began in 2008.

The grand opening ceremonies for the parks will begin at Royal and Annie Smith Park at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. The ceremony will then move to Liberty Park where a ribbon will be cut. Lunch will then be served at the pavilion at Liberty Park. Parking and shuttle services will be provided from Carroll Middle School.
