Mesquite expands recycling program
From Staff Reports
City to add 5,000 more bins for residents
The city of Mesquite will add 5,000 bins to its recycling program based on the positive response by residents to the curbside recycling program. This will bring the total to approximately 17,000 recycling bins.
After launching the Recycling Bin Pilot Project in August 2008, the city had an increase in participation which resulted in a 50 percent rise in the tonnage of recyclable materials collected.
The city has already begun distributing the additional 5,000 bins to selected residential streets.
“It will take about two weeks to distribute the bins throughout the city. Those streets selected to receive bins were divided equally throughout the city so as to not over-burden existing route schedules,” said Charles Goodson, the city’s solid waste Manager,
In addition to purchasing extra bins, the city has also purchased four new recycling trucks to better serve its residents. Goodson indicated that typically about 50 to 60 percent of a resident’s household waste can be recycled instead of going to the landfill.
Green recycling bins are also available to those residents not in the pilot areas. Any resident who would like to have a bin may request one by calling the city of Mesquite recycling hotline at 972-216-6972.

" That's great. It would be even better if the bins were picked up every week as scheduled - not every few weeks when the thing's overflowing. "
