Lady Cats clinch fourth straight district title

Published: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 7:57 PM CDT
The district championship wasn’t clinched before Tuesday’s game, but it might as well have been based on how the Celina softball team has steamrolled district opponents this season. Officially claiming the hardware was simply a formality.

The Lady Cats used a battering ram of a lineup to sledge-hammer Whitesboro, 23-0, in just three innings in the regular season road finale to seal a fourth consecutive conference title.

“It’s an exciting time for Celina softball,” head coach Billy Coleman said. “I don’t have a lot of complaints right now.”

Every hitter in the lineup reached safely at least once as Celina scored 10 runs in the first inning, six in the second and seven more in the third. Catcher Jasmine San Miguel, the team’s only senior, went 3-for-3 with a home run, a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Taylor Norris doubled twice, Olivia Braddock tripled, Lindsie Knowles drove in three runs on two hits and Shelby Carter plated four runs thanks in part to another triple.

“We’re swinging it one through nine,” Coleman said. “Up and down the lineup every girl is hitting.”

Coleman said posting 23 to the board Tuesday was likely the most explosive single game in program history.

“I don’t remember ever scoring more than that,” he said.

Hard to keep track when runs come as fast and frequent as they have. Celina (20-6, 9-0) has scored 119 runs in nine district games. Opponents have scored seven.

And while it would be easy to write off the disparity to weak opposition, Coleman says not so fast. Argyle and Sanger are both good teams, and Prosper is always a dangerous opponent, he said.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the regional semifinals last season and have recorded more than 20 wins on the year.

“That’s not too weak to me,” Coleman said.

Maybe it simply speaks to how strong Celina is. Coleman said the team appears to be peaking at the right time, with only one district game remaining on the slate. It may be difficult to find many more opponents than that.

The Lady Cats will play Mesquite Poteet on April 23 in a warm-up game, but other potential tune-up candidates have cancelled. Not hard to understand why. The state’s third-ranked 3A team appears to be on a stately mission and anything and everything in its way is bound to get trampled.
