Starwood pets on parade (SLIDESHOW)
by Jan Bellamy, jbellamy@acnpapers.com
Starwood pets paraded for the first time for the neighborhood event March 14. The
weather was “purr-fect” after being rained out the weekend before. Local businesses donated prizes to raise money for the SPCA and Starwood gave the SPCA $1,178.34 and a truck load of donations.
“We were inspired to make this event happen after loosing our 21-year-old cat, Sami,” said Toni Nolan. "Sami was
purr to hear anyone's problems, loved to keep you company while you were
reading, watching TV, or working on the computer, gave great massages with
her paws, and enjoyed being my daughters best friend.:
Sami was one of six cats in the Nolan family, which, in addition to one dog, which passed away over the years of 23 yeares of marriage, Nolan said.
Sami was the last to leave, four years ago, and the memories of her still warm the heart.
"She protected us by letting us know when something unexpected was in the house such as spiders, wasp, scorpions, etc." Nolan said. "Our family truly felt a major loss when Sami left us
so after morning her for 2 months we adopted two kittens from a local shelter. One kitten looks just like Sami so her memory is alive every time
we look at her."
Starwood residents came out to show how much they loved pets by participating in photo contests, pet and family portraits, an obstacle course, a neighborhood pet registry, face painting and pet parade. They also picked up ADT “pet alert” window clings from McGruff the Crime Dog, ate pizza from Papa Murphy's, enjoyed a wonderful atmosphere with help from the Pet Butler and Bark Buster Dog Trainers.
Nolan said she wants a “big Thanks” to go out to the Pet Day Committee: David Stana, Dotty Bollner, Susan Yerebeck, Doug Beldon, Caroline VanZandt, Jana Jannasch, and Ruth Manning. And a “BIG Thanks” to everyone who supported the SPCA, came to the event, and all the added volunteers on event day: Evan Veno, Robert Tadlock, Cameron Collis, Meredyth Carroll & her friend Jennifer, Richard Silverston, Georgia Buys, Larry TenBrink, Andrew Houghtlin, Chris & Denise Stana, Teresa Niermeyer, Shelley Latta, and Scott Burday.
Sponsors and businesses who donated items and/or their own time at the event are: Silver Star Pictures, Vision Quest Design Group, PAW Nanny, SPCA, ADT, Ozier Orthodontics, Best Nest Pediatrics, Pet Medical Center, Bo's Bunkhouse, A Place for Pets Resort, Strikz, NYLO Hotel, Spa at Willowbend, AALAM The Salon, La Costa Mexican
