Students connect talent with heritage (PHOTOS)

Heritage Association of Frisco knows how to inspire young artists and connect them with their roots. Through the annual Art and Media contest, about 600 Frisco ISD students got to know their community better this year while showing off their creative talents and winning prizes.
“This year’s theme is ‘Once Upon a Time: Exploring Our City’s Historical Markers’,” said Marla Fields, as she hosted the two-hour awards ceremony in Frisco’s near-filled city council chambers Tuesday afternoon.
“We have only 26 markers,” said Fields, who coordinated the project with schools and teachers. “Can everyone say they know our markers better now?”
The majority of the youngsters was present. Each got his or her moment in the spotlight by going up to the stage, introducing themselves in the microphone, showing off their art while it was also displayed on the overhead screen, taking their certificates and prizes from sponsors Babe’s and Richardson’s Bike Mart, and shaking hands with Mayor Maher Maso.
“Heritage Association of Frisco volunteers do a wonderful job of preserving Frisco’s heritage,” Maso said. “I also want to thank the teachers who are here today. Please stand up.”
Proud instructors rose from seats in every corner of the council chambers for a moment of recognition from their applauding students and their parents.
Prior to the opening of the ceremonies, a PowerPoint presentation played on the overhead screens. Included were highlight entries, such as that by Doris Kwon, 5th grade, Fisher Elementary, which HAF will use for its next brochure.
Also recognized were project volunteers and the five judges: Eliene Carver, Georgi Still,Chuck venable, Judy Isbell, and Bob Warren. Their biographies are available at www.friscoheritage.org.
