Final football scrimmages punctuate spring season

Published: Saturday, May 15, 2010 12:44 PM CDT
With the high school sports calendar nearing its end, the next step in preparations for the fall will take form in the coming weeks with the final stages of spring football.

The past few weeks have featured rigorous practices and workouts, with some schools mixing in a slew of scrimmages along the way. But within the next two weeks, coaches will be one step closer to allotting things like roster space for both varsity and junior varsity with each school’s annual spring game on tap.

While the spring game gives fans a chance to see their respective schools in action for the first time since the conclusion of the 2009 season, each one is unique in its own way. With no consistent, widespread set of rules or regulations in play, teams can treat their spring game just like a standard four quarter gauntlet of football.

Others may opt to have each squad run 10 plays, or rotate any combination of first and second teams.

The spring game will also give player a chance at gaining the upper hand in any unsettled positional battles, as the steps made to fill holes left by graduating seniors will be on display as well.

Take Plano Senior, for instance, which has already endured three scrimmages in as many weeks, will showcase its depth in the backfield and progress in filling holes at wide receiver in the opening slate of Plano ISD spring game action. The Wildcats finish up at 5 p.m. Thursday from Clark Stadium.

Plano East, which boasted the district’s Offensive Player of the Year in senior Ryan Foster last season, will further shed light on the competition in line to fill the shoes of the dual-threat signal caller on Friday in the Panthers’ spring game at 7:30 p.m. from Kimbrough Stadium. The Panthers have an entire showcase built around the spring game, with festivities beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Plano West will attempt to fill the void of the most prolific player in program history in senior Jackson Jeffcoat, along with displaying a smattering of new faces throughout the offense in the Wolves’ spring game, which is May 28 at 7 p.m. from Clark.

In private school action, Prestonwood Christian Academy hoisted its second TAPPS State Title in program history last season. Now, with a cavalcade of returners in place, the Lions will take the next step in their pursuit of a third title with during Prestonwood’s annual spring game on May 28 at 6 p.m. from Lion Stadium.

In search of its first postseason berth in program history, John Paul II will take the field for it’s apex in spring football on Thursday at 7 p.m.
