Boxers or Boxer? Plano Animal Shelter promotes Give Dad a Dog (or a Cat) Event

With Father’s Day approaching, many children turn to the old traditional standbys for gifts: bad tie, bad cologne or bad boxers.

This year the representatives from the Plano Animal Shelter are asking residents, “Why give your dad a pair of boxers for Father’s Day when you can adopt a Boxer for him?”

Now through Father’s Day, June 20, the shelter is offering special adoption deals during its “Give Dad a Dog (or a Cat) Event.”

“We are above and beyond full and want to get as many animals into happy homes as possible,” said Debbie New, spokeswoman for the shelter. “This is a great way to make a father happy in a unique way and probably make the kids happy, too.”

The shelter offers a wide range of pets of all ages. Adoptions of all cats over the age of 6 months are priced at only $25 and all dogs over the age of 6 months are priced at $60. New said the regular fee for adoptions is $80. That price includes these services:

spay/neuter surgery (required by law)

rabies vaccination (required by law)

first puppy or kitten vaccination

heartworm test for dogs (if old enough)

microchip and microchip registration

New said this is a different kind of family gift, a gift of great companionship while giving a shelter pet a loving home.

This also coincides with the shelter’s summer push to find homes for pets. New said the shelter starts facing an influx of animals in the summer months.

She said that because it is summertime families need to be mindful of their pets, especially the ones that stay outside.

“With the heat as high as it is, people need to make sure animals have shelter and as much water as possible during the day,” she said.

Preview some of the pets available at www.plano.gov/animal and click on “adoptables.” Meet the adoptable pets in person at the Plano Animal Shelter, 4028 Plano Parkway, on Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
