Coppell YMCA to host Lance Armstrong focus group
By Jim Kilpatrick , jkilpatrick@acnpapers.com
The Coppell Family YMCA will host a Lance Armstrong Foundation focus group at 11:30 a.m. May 20 at 146 Town Center Boulevard.
The event is a cancer survivorship program based on a joint union of the Armstrong Foundation and the YMCA of the USA. This is the fourth focus group sponsored by the Coppell YMCA.
“We are planning on having 10 or 12 people in the focus group,” said Gayle Westapher, associate executive director at the YMCA. “This is about the usual number.”
“This is good because we are touching more people each time,” Westapher said.
The Livestrong initiative involves a research-based program designed to focus on the specific wants, needs and interests of cancer survivors, Westapher said.
“The Coppell YMCA program is unique because it is customized for each survivor,” Westapher said.
The Livestrong program inspires and empowers people affected by cancer. The organization believes that “unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything,” according to the Lance Armstrong website.
“We want to accommodate participants that may have become less mobile, are more prone to fatigue,” said Gina Tomaso, associate director of membership and fitness retention. “This personalized program will assist in the improving of a survivor’s ability to perform activities of daily living.”
There is a 12-week program for cancer survivors offered at the YMCA that will help participants to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and ultimately improve the quality of life, Tomaso said.
A light lunch will be provided during the focus group meeting.
The YMCA is seeking cancer survivors and oncologists willing to share their opinion for the May focus group.
A light lunch will be served during the event.
