Collin County health ranked on top for Texas counties
By Zach Markovic, zmarkovic@acnpapers.com
Residents of Collin County have a pretty healthy outlook on life. Well, healthier than the rest of Texas at least.
According to a report from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Collin County's overall health status was deemed the best of all Texas counties. In the report, the county ranked first in multiple categories that included health factors, mortality and health behaviors.
According to the newsletter sent out by County Commissioner Joe Jaynes, The County Line, the report ranks all the counties within a state according to a number of factors affecting health outcomes - length of life and quality of life - and health factors. Those factors include health behaviors, access to and quality of health care, social and economic factors, environment and programs and policies.
According to the newsletter, Texas is made up of 254 counties, 221 of which were included in this study. Due to data coverage limitations, not all Texas counties were included in the analysis.
The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute's County Health Rankings report was underwritten by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. According to the report, the goal was to start work on getting an accurate account of health across each state.
"The problem is that there are big differences in health across communities, with some places being much healthier than others," according to the report. "And up to now, it has been hard to get a standard way to measure how healthy a county is and see where they can improve.
