DART publishes Independence Day celebration routes
By Jon Vanderlaan, jvanderlaan@acnpapers.com
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, Dallas Area Rapid Transit has provided information about what services can transport people to member-city events.
One such notable event will take place Saturday at Independence Parkway for the annual Plano Independence Day Parade, presented by the Plano Early Lions Club.
Ken Gleason, coordinator for the parade, said although he previously has not publicized the service, he would like to help make people aware of the alternative to driving to the parade.
Mark Ball, a spokesman for DART, said the agency sees an increase in ridership during holiday events such as Independence Day parades, and wants to provide member cities with that extra information.
“Plano is a member city of DART and we certainly want to provide them with as much opportunity to benefit from the DART system serving their community,” he said. “If the public can take public transportation quick, safer, help with the environment, we want to make those opportunities available.”
Because DART has worked with some of the events for several years, Ball said they are able to predict the resources they will need to help people travel to the various events in the Dallas area.
“What we’re hoping, of course, is that the public will take advantage of the transportation that is available to them and maybe see a part of the Dallas area they have not seen before.”
Other events to which DART will provide service are the Kaboom Town celebration in Addison, Farmers Branch Independence Day Celebration, Irving Independence Day Parade, Fireworks on Main in Rowlett, Star Spangled Celebration at the Firewheel Town Center, Patriotic Pops Chorus in Richardson, All-American Fourth in Plano, Irving’s Firecracker Fourth, and the Star-Spangled Spectacular and Fair Park Fourth on the Fifth, both in Dallas.
