Empty stomach means full backpacks for area students

Published: Thursday, August 5, 2010 4:57 PM CDT
Joel Miller is still hungry.

Pastor of The Summit, a church in Allen, he went on a hunger strike last November to raise 30,000 non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army and McKinney Food Pantry, ultimately surpassing that goal with 36,000 total donations, and he’s devoting himself to a water-only diet once again. This time the goal is to raise 60,000 items of clothing and school supplies for North Dallas For Kids, an organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged children throughout Dallas.

The organization announced on its Facebook page late Wednesday night that the hunger strike had begun.

It will continue until the goal is reached.

An empty stomach won’t be all Miller has to contend with, as blistering August heat raises the stakes. Once again, he will camp on top of a trailer, which is parked in front of Trinity Irish Hall Restaurant along US 75 in Allen.

An additional goal of the strike is to bring awareness to the problems of the homeless.

Items can be donated at Miller’s trailer or at other locations around the area. A list of items needed can be found at http://www.northdallasforkids.com/items.php, where donations can also be made. A $25 donation buys a school supply kit that contains a backpack filled with pencils, notebooks, erasers, and other items.
