For residents of Plano, Eisenbergs Skatepark has long offered a cool place to skate, but this month it will present a stage for two different worlds to come together in an explosion of rap, R&B, rock and ramps.
The Freestyle 2010 event will be the first of its kind for Eisenbergs and will not be a shy attempt at bringing a new vibe to the city's skatepark mecca. According to Polar Hitz marketing manager Keith "KG" Garner, the event will bring the best of the Dallas hip hop and R&B world to Plano.
"The event is a community family event and will be bringing two very different worlds together," Garner said. "Most people don't realize how much they already mesh, and hopefully this event will bring some energy to Dallas."
Garner said Texas is one of the least developed among the most rap-producing states. He hopes this event will bring awareness to Polar Hitz and the movements, since the artists involved are just beginning to make their mark on the music industry.
"I expect to bring a lot of awareness to Polar Hitz and the artists and a lot of exposure to Eisenbergs," Garner said. "The artists are the next top artists to come out of the Dallas area. It allows fans to see them as they grow and become part of that movement."
Garner said the event will be family-friendly and will not only focus on music but on the sports that made Eisenbergs the place it is today.
"There will be a lot of interaction," Garner said. "The biking, skateboarding and rollerblading will go on continuously as the artists are performing. [The audience] will be able to hear the music, hear the artists and look to the left and see the sports. There will be lots of energy."
According to its website, Eisenbergs Skatepark opened in July 1997 and started a skatepark revolution. Built by the family of X Games gold medalist Arlo Eisenberg, Eisenbergs was one of the first skateparks designed to be family- and spectator-friendly, with amenities that include a full-scale retail shop, concessions and an arcade.
Eisenbergs Skatepark was designed for beginners, intermediate and pro-level skaters and bikers, making it possible for both younger and older generations of participants to develop their skills. Since its inception, Eisenbergs' format has been imitated hundreds of times, but never duplicated. Through innovation and imagination, Eisenbergs stays ahead of the curve with constantly evolving events, camps and other programs.
"Eisenbergs has been very kind to let us do something in collaboration with them," Garner said. "Especially during the summertime, kids are playing PlayStation and Xbox, so we are trying to bring back those [exciting] activities for kids to get out of the house and move around and get some exercise."
Garner said the event is sponsored by bmxden.com and will feature more than 10 musical performances.
"It's a fun event for summertime for everyone to come out," Garner said. "Red Bull will be there, and artists will have albums for sale. Not too many companies are helping artists become national acts, but Polar Hitz are doing that as we speak."
Freestyle 2010 will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Eisenbergs. Garner said it will be an all-ages show with performances beginning at 7 p.m.
