McKinney notches short, sweet win over Lake Dallas

Published: Tuesday, August 31, 2010 9:09 PM CDT
McKinney High moved its record to 13-9 on Tuesday night with a quick 3-game win over Lake Dallas (25-21, 25-11, 25-15). Lady Lions head coach Jennifer Bishop said the victory showed an all-around effort from her team, each of whom played key roles.

“I like the fact that we're starting to implement the lessons I've been wanting them to learn over the preseason from going to all our tournaments,” she said. “I've seen them talking more, I've seen them moving the ball around better and actually initiating change themselves.”

Senior middle blocker Ashley Bennett had a team-high nine kills and five blocks, senior libero Caitlin Roberts dug up 18 balls and contributed four kills, freshman outside hitter Erin Hoppe had six kills on the night, senior setter Kayla Rivero had eight digs and 16 assists, and sophomore outside hitter Anna Robertson notched 13 digs and three aces.

“I have good leaders,” Bishop said. “Kayla Rivero and Caitlin Roberts really take control of my back court playing defense and making really great decisions, which allows my hitters to be successful. Everyone keys in on the big hitters and what they're doing, but if you didn't have good passers or good defenders or good setters they couldn't be successful.”

McKinney and Lake Dallas chased one another point-by-point to start the match before the Lady Falcons fell into a 14-10 deficit in part via mistakes on their side of the court. A running save by Roberts later in Game 1, evidence of a strong defensive presence from the Lady Lions, turned into additional separation on the way to an eventual 25-21 win for McKinney.

From there the point differential spread as McKinney picked up momentum at the expense of Lake Dallas. Game 2 saw strong blocking up front by Bennett and senior outside hitter Lucy Keyworth, as well as consecutive aces from Robertson that gave the Lady Lions an early 7-2 lead. McKinney would advance to an 18-10 lead and not give up a single additional point before the game ended.

After that rout, Bishop threw an entirely new lineup on the court to start Game 3, which allowed Lake Dallas to keep pace for a while before the fresh players composed themselves and pulled away. The match-winning point came on a strong kill by Bennett.

The Lady Lions next face Frisco Heritage in a 6:00 pm away game on Friday night.
