Sherman pulls away from Little Elm

By BLAINE CRIMMINS, bcrimmins@acnpapers.com
LITTLE ELM - The Little Elm Lobos are coming off a playoff season on the strength of their defense. That same strength kept them in the game against a pretty good team from Sherman on Friday night.
"That was our identity last year, that our defense was able to get us to the playoffs," Lobo head coach Donald Stowers said. "It's no different this year."
But the Bearcats ultimately proved too much. Zac Whitfield ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns as Sherman defeated Little Elm, 30-7.
The Lobos (1-1), on the other hand, appeared out of sync early in the game, losing fumbles on their first two possessions. The first turnover set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Long and the second led to a 27-yard field goal by Eric Hosek.
Just like that, Sherman was up 17-0.
"We put ourselves in a hole early," Stowers said, adding that the Lobos were over-thinking early in the game and didn't play fundamentally sound.
But after the initial outburst, Little Elm's defense dug in and shut down Sherman for the next two quarters. Sean Breard, Darius Ramirez, and Zach Vaughn each had a sack as the Lobos began swarming Long in the backfield.
"I felt like in the second half we came out and did a great job defensively in holding those guys," Stowers said.
The score remained the same until the fourth quarter when Whitfield starting finding some holes. The senior running back broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run on a draw play and scored on a 58-yard run less than 3 minutes later.
Stowers said if you're not able to move the ball offensively and get anything positive, a team of Sherman's quality will make you pay.
"Against a team like that, if you give them enough opportunities they're going to find a way to punch it in," he said.
The Lobos had difficulty moving the ball throughout the game against the speedy Bearcats. Little Elm's only score came on a 1-yard keeper by quarterback Brandon Dudley with 3 minutes to go in the game.
Next Friday, Little Elm travels to Standridge Stadium to take on Carrollton Creekview at 7:30 p.m.
