Coppell Women’s Club hosts Stover

Published: Friday, September 10, 2010 12:32 PM CDT
The Coppell Women’s Club held its fall luncheon Sept. 1 at Frida’s Mexican Grill and heard about Dallas’ Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children from Doug Stover, human resource director.

There were more than 70 members present to hear Stover tell the history of the hospital, which was established in 1921.

“Usually at the fall meeting we have the mayor speak,” said Jan Wagner-Adkinson, president of the Coppell Women’s Club. “Last year, Jayne Peters talked to the group.”

Although Stover is not officially the mayor until Nov. 10, the women welcomed his talk.

“He enjoys speaking to us and we enjoy having him. He is just a great person,” Wagner-Adkinson said.

Since 1921, more than 190,000 children have been served by the hospital, said Stover.

“I am on the ambassador speaking circuit for the hospital,” Stover said. “I speak to civic and social organizations about the story of Scottish Rite Hospital.” Volunteers provide more than 100,000 hours a year to the hospital, and no patients’ families are ever billed one penny for service provided by the hospital., he added.

The Coppell Women’s Club was established in 1973 and has served the community ever since.

“The Coppell Women’s Club is open to all women who have an interest in Coppell,” Wagner-Adkinson said. “You don’t even have to live in Coppell.”

The organization in the past had been larger but in recent years had gotten small.

“We are working on having a growth mode,” Wagner-Adkinson said. “Things change. The fall luncheon attendance was 20 percent higher than last year’s event.”

Attendance for every event so far this year has been outstanding, Wagner-Adkinson said.

The next general meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at the Coppell YMCA in the Williams Room.
