Downtown restaurant destroyed by fire

Published: Monday, October 4, 2010 4:43 PM CDT
An early morning fire engulfed The Tres Amigos restaurant on N. Tennessee Street in flames on Monday.

The fire broke out sometime before 4:20 a.m. in the restaurant's building located in the 800 block of N. Tennessee Street.

McKinney Assistant Fire Chief Frank Roma said some nearby residents smelled smoke in the neighborhood and discovered the fire, and called 911.

Firefighters raced to the scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the southern end of the building. Fire crews issued a second alarm for additional units. Fire crews from Allen and Fairview covered McKinney's fire stations as they attacked the fire, Roma said.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than two hours. Roma said crews were able to keep the fire contained.

"It was contained to the area of origin," Roma said. "It took awhile to gain control of it...There was a large volume of fire in the building. We had to use exterior master streams to gain control of the fire."

The fire destroyed almost half of the building and created a total loss for the restaurant. Roma said the building was in the process of being sold at the time of the fire. Collin County Appraisal District records show that the building is currently owned by a holdings company located in Coral Gables, Fla.

There were no injuries caused as a result of the fire, Roma said.

Attempts were made to locate the restaurant's owner and operator, but they could not be found by presstime.

" What caused this fire? That store has not opened for business for the past few months. How could a deserted business spontaneously catch on fire?
Also, it wasn't a restaurant. It was a beer store that was attempting a transition of adding a deli-style food service as well. That plan seemed to stop shortly after start. There was, however, a prosperously growing and friendly, Mexican restaurant that was adjacent to the Tres Amigos.
And... night that this fire took place, was the same night that my little girl's new bicycle was stolen from our yard. We live across the street. "
