Newman Smith had another outstanding performance this week as the running attack of the Trojans continues. They beat the Frisco Heritage Coyotes 48-0.
The Trojans running attack of senior running back Braxton Bearden, senior running back D-Jay Jones and senior quarterback Jose Martinez was just too much for the Coyotes defense. Each player was able to break big plays and was a big contributor to the blow-out.
“We are getting better every week. Heritage is a young team who is well coached but we were in the right spots tonight,” said Paul Ressa, head coach for Newman Smith. “I am really proud of our kids tonight.”
After the early mishap, Heritage was able to settle down as they tried to get into the game. The Coyotes are a running team, but even after putting together a few good drives, they were never able to put any points on the board. The Trojan defense was up for the challenge.
“Heritage runs the flex bone offense which can be hard to defend against,” Ressa said. “Our kids really studied the film to make sure we were not confused by anything tonight.”
In the second quarter both teams ran the ball for a majority of the time. The only difference is one team was able to break the big play and the other wasn’t. The Trojans continued the ground attack, Jones scored on a 21-yard run making the score 21-0.
The ensuing drive for the Coyotes was the best chance they had to score all night. After an extended drive, they fumbled the ball on the Trojans 25-yard line and were not able to recover. Once again the Trojans capitalized on off the turnover, adding a pass through the air and putting them up by four touchdowns.
Newman Smith went into halftime up 28-0.
Frisco Heritage looked to come out of the second half strong and get back into the ball game, but were unable to after a quick fumble on the second play of the second half.
Once again for the Trojans, Bearden scored on the ground for his third of the game making the score 35-0. Bearden now has six rushing touchdowns in the past two weeks.
Throughout the second half, Heritage continued the run the ball for a majority of the half despite being down so much. However, when the Coyotes did try to gain some ground through the air they were unsuccessful.
In the fourth, the Trojans added a couple of more touchdowns. The first on 33-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Tripp Abbott, and then a 17-yard run by Abbott. Other than the two touchdowns, both teams continued to run the ball and the clock out.
Newman Smith wins another blow out at Standridge Stadium, 48-0. It was the Trojans second consecutive shutout, and the second straight week they have scored 40 or more points.
“We are trying to make a statement. We are getting some of our kids back, and if we can be healthy by week 11 we are very confident in what we can do,” Ressa said. “We have a motto; we will play ‘as one.’ Everything is starting to come together. We control our own destiny.”
Next week Newman Smith plays Frisco Centennial at Frisco Memorial Stadium, while Frisco Heritage plays R.L. Turner at Standridge Stadium.
