Not resting upon its laurels as the nation’s safest city, Plano is preparing to open a new fire station and emergency facility aimed at focusing disaster relief efforts.

Fire Station 12, Fire Logistics Warehouse and the William E. Peterson Emergency Operations Center, though quite the mouthful to say, is a three-in-one center combining efforts from the fire department and emergency services in Plano.

The facility will be dedicated with much fanfare at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 22 at 4101 West Parker Road.

The Fire Station and Logistics Warehouse has been in operation since December 2009, with the dedication awaiting the completion of the emergency operations facility. The new facility is an upgrade for the emergency services for Plano, said Shane Stovall, director of emergency management.

“Previously, [emergency coordination] was done in the basement of city hall,” Stovall said. “This location will allow us to have more people in one location for coordination efforts.”

Fire Station 12 houses an engine company, MICU ambulance, battalion chief and the department’s utility (light and air) vehicle, according to a city release. The station maintains 24 personnel throughout three shifts. The strategic placement of the facility provides a geographic solution to the surrounding area while simultaneously easing workloads on nearby stations.

Occupied by the Resource Division’s Support Services staff, the Fire Logistics Warehouse serves as the quartermaster depot for all firefighting and emergency medical services equipment, supply, uniforms, personal protective equipment and accessories and the Fire Department’s Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus program. It features an enclosed apparatus bay and a full-service loading dock.

The William E. Peterson Emergency Operations Center facilitates daily “blue sky” operations and serves as a training center and the command, control and coordination point for the city’s emergency operations during large emergencies, disasters and major events. City, county, state and federal government agencies and public, private and volunteer sector representatives will use the facility to coordinate response and recovery actions in the city of Plano.

“It is a training facility on a day-to-day basis and it can be used as a control center for large-scale emergencies,” Stovall said. “And it allows us to bring other groups together, which gives us a lot more agencies on the table.”

The U.S. Green Building Council is reviewing the certification of this complex as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver for meeting environmentally sustainable construction standards. LEED features throughout the facility include low-flow fixtures to reduce water consumption, drought-resistant landscaping, solar tube skylights and energy-efficient ventilating and air conditioning systems. More than 40 percent of the construction materials were locally manufactured and contain more than 20 percent recycled content.
