Davidson announces candidacy for Place 3

Published: Sunday, January 9, 2011 3:24 PM CST
André Davidson, current Plano City Council Place 3 representative, announced her plans to run for re-election in May.

This is a quick turnaround on a term for Davidson, who won a heated battle with Cathy Fang in a special election to fill the council seat that opened when Mabrie Jackson left office last year.

According to a statement released Friday, Davidson, a 30-year resident of Plano, is reiterating her commitment to economic development, property revitalization efforts and a strong public safety department designed to protect the fabric of the Plano community.

“My council term has been a very educational and rewarding experience, and I am looking forward to using that experience to increase my effectiveness in my second term,” Davidson said. “During my time on council, I have worked with my fellow council members to focus on Plano’s economic development strategy to create job opportunities and increase our tax base.” More than 20 years of community leadership have given Davidson a unique perspective on the needs of the Plano community. In addition to serving as executive director of Leadership Plano from 1998 to 2005, her civic activities include serving as board or event chair of the Volunteer Center of Collin County, Plano ISD Education Foundation, Leadership Plano, Mayor’s Community Outreach Task Force, Plano Youth Leadership, and as vice president of the City House Board of Directors. Currently, she serves as a member of The Medical Center of Plano Board of Trustees and is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Davidson is also a former member of the advisory boards of the Plano Chamber of Commerce and the Junior League of Plano.

Davidson plans to continue her legacy of leadership and service to her community for many years to come.

“Having raised my own family in Plano, I am committed to keeping our community a place where families choose to live, work and play. As part of that commitment, I will continue to support neighborhood revitalization efforts such as Plano’s inaugural ‘Love Where You Live’ project,” she said. “This collaborative public/private partnership mobilized resources and volunteers from the city of Plano, neighborhood homeowner associations, school PTAs, church groups and community organizations. Several hundred citizens joined together to make minor home repairs, clean up yards and alleyways, haul away trash, and host a neighborhood block party for area residents in one of Plano’s older neighborhoods near Shawnee Park. As a result, the neighborhood looks great and residents have a renewed sense of community,” she said.

Plano community leader and retired educator Dr. Myrtle Hightower expressed her support for Davidson.

“André has been a selfless community servant for many years,” Hightower said. “The positive contributions she has made as a member of the city council have underscored the depth of her commitment to Plano and its citizens. Electing leaders with André’s foresight and caring attitude, coupled with her ability to make well-informed decisions on behalf of her constituents, is critical if we are to maintain the remarkable quality of life for which Plano is so well-known.”

Davidson and her husband of 44 years, Warren, have two adult children and six grandchildren.

Davidson will formally kick off her campaign at a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Haggard Party Barn in Plano.
