'Paul:' A nerd's new favorite comedy
By Emily Hill, ehill@acnpapers.com
Think of all the sci-fi movies you've ever seen. Now throw in a couple of British guys, a rustic RV and a sarcastic pot-smoking alien voiced by Seth Rogen, and what do you get? One of the most hilarious, homage to sci-fi movies everywhere, "Paul."
"Paul" is a film that sounds so bizarre when described that it could have the potential to be a flop. But "Superbad" director Greg Mottola combines modern-day comedic actors that make this movie work, and oh wow, does it work well. The entire movie is funny. But of course it is; it's written by "Shaun of the Dead" duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Two British guys, Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost), decide to head off into the great wilderness of the America's "UFO Heartland" as they follow and attend Comic Con, a lifelong dream for the two nerds. While traveling down the road an old school 1970s-ish RV, they visit popular alien sighting areas such as Area 51 and the "Black Mailbox." But when they witness an accident, the duo is "hijacked" by a real-life alien nicknamed 'Paul,' who has escaped from Area 51 after discovering he was a prisoner there.
Pegg and Frost are the epiphany of British humor, and when combined with Rogen, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, it's as if the director doesn't want you to breathe in the movie, and you'll be too busy laughing to really care.
This homage to sci-fi films is for the nerds and geeks alike. "Paul" makes references to almost every sci-fi movie made. Even Sigourney Weaver, the star of the "Aliens" movies, is in the movie. Now who doesn't want to see that reference? Go watch this film, even if you aren't an alien buff. I dare you to watch this without laughing.
"Paul" starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, Joe Lo Truglio and the voice of Seth Rogen; written by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Tim Bevan, directed by Greg Mottola.
