Kever reelected to city council, at-large race heads to runoff

Published: Saturday, May 14, 2011 11:37 PM CDT
McKinney citizens spoke clearly to reelect Geralyn Kever to a second term on city council, but none of the five at-large candidates vying to replace longtime council member Pete Huff gathered the majority of votes needed to secure election.

Steve Bell and Roger Harris were separated by a razor's edge in the polls, with 35.99 and 35.71 percent of the vote respectively, and the two will face off again in a runoff election scheduled for June 18. Early voting will run June 6-14.

For now, the campaign continues.

"We are planning on starting on Monday morning on how we will address issues and get our message out to the city of McKinney," Bell said. "Other members who will not be in the runoff will move votes in my direction."

Bell is a former city council member who represented District 4 in the late-1990s and early-2000s.

Harris is on the board of directors for the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and has made economic expansion around the Collin County Regional Airport a focus of his campaign.

Kever will serve another term at District 2 after defeating challenger Tracy Rath, chair of the McKinney Community Development Corporation, with 67 percent of votes cast.

"Over the course of the last two months, I've spent a significant amount of time walking door to door, meeting face to face with the people I represent," Kever said.

Kever attributed her success to that grassroots style of campaigning and added that thanks to the conversations she's had with citizens, she feels better able to represent them.

After a long campaign, Rath announced she would run for council long before the official filing period for candidacy began, Kever is ready to return to council and hopeful about the future.

"I've served in a recession and I'm ready to serve in a recovery," she said. "Six months from now I think we're going to be able to see a significant amount of progress in terms of economic development."

District 4 city council member Ray Ricchi was also on the ballot Saturday. He was unchallenged in his bid for a second council term.
