Dankel wins McKinney ISD board seat
By Marthe Stinton and Andrew Snyder, Staff Writers
The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees will soon be welcoming a new face as polls closed Saturday showing a lofty lead for newcomer Amy Dankel.
In her first political campaign, Dankel unseated Place 4 incumbent and board vice president Dick Stevens, winning convincingly with 64 percent of the vote.
"I just really appreciate all my supporters, my family and friends who helped me and just everybody who got out to vote," she said.
With 22 years teaching experience, including 11 years with MISD, and a masters in curriculum and instruction, Dankel said she has a firm grasp on what needs to go in the district's schools and feels that will help her navigate her new position.
"My focus is really on academic excellence," Dankel said. "I think we need to make sure we have that for every child at MISD."
Place 4 was one of two district seat up for election this year, but it was the only contested race. Board president Lynn Sperry, who has served for more than 25 years, drew no challenger in her bid for another term at Place 5.
Stevens was first elected in 2008 and created an environment of open debate by taking on the role of board facilitator, he said.
"I supported the social economic zoning because I thought it was the best for the community--regardless of where you live and whether or not you have children," he said. "I always voted for the kids and did what I felt was right for the kids, but the citizens voted thought for who they thought was the best. I guess they felt a new face is better than someone who had experience. That's the way it goes. People voted and Amy won."
The MISD Board of Trustees is comprised of seven board members who serve overlapping terms of three years each. Sperry and Dankel will serve this year alongside Kathi Livezey, Wade Johnson, Maria McKinzie, Curtis Rippee and Mark Rude. After elections, the board will elect a president, vice-president and secretary for one-year terms.
