Former Plano QB relives past success in different field

Published: Wednesday, June 1, 2011 4:46 PM CDT
For the first time since 1994, Mitch Maher was again honored for his athletic talents.

However, what the former Plano Senior quarterback did is something a bit unexpected, given he took to the golf course, sank a hole-in-one and won a new car.

For those who don’t know Maher, he was born and raised in Plano.

Maher was a star quarterback for the Wildcats before moving on to the University of North Texas. While with the Mean Green, Maher set numerous school records, including career pass attempts, completions and yards as well as most yards and touchdowns in a single season on his way to leading the team to a 7-4-1 record and the Southland Conference Championship in 1994.

Since his time on the gridiron, Maher has attended Dallas Theological Seminary. From that point forward, he has been doing work in the ministry. Maher is currently the senior pastor at Redeemer Community Church in Katy.

On May 23, Maher participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Ray Dorr Golf Classic, which was held at Pebble Creek Country Club in Bryan. Maher approached the 17th tee hoping to just finish out the round on a strong note.

He did a bit better than that.

Maher elected to use a 5-iron off the tee for the par 3. On this particular day, the hole was playing 199 yards downhill and downwind.

“I thought a 5-iron would give me the best chance to get it on the green, which was my goal,” Maher said.

Once he struck the ball, Maher knew he hit it well. It was actually the best ball he hit all day, but Maher did not know it was going to be that good. The ball was headed straight for the pin the entire time. Then it hit the green about 20 feet short of the hole. From there, the ball glided directly into the hole.

“Needless to say, it was pretty exciting,” Maher said.

However, Maher was about to get a lot more excited. For hitting the hole-in-one, Maher won a 2011 Toyota Venza, which was donated for the tournament by Atkinson Toyota of Bryan.

It had been quite a few years since Maher was the man of the hour from an athletic perspective, but that is exactly what he was on the 17th green as he picked his ball up from the hole and picked up the keys to a new car.
