Reading for fun at the Rowlett Public Library
By Kenny Green, kgreen@acnpapers.com
The Rowlett Public Library is giving children the opportunity this summer to "Dig Up a Good Book." The library's annual summer reading program kicks off on Monday, June 6 and runs through Saturday, July 30. The summer reading club is funded by the Friends of the Rowlett Library Inc. and donations from the Rowlett community.
"We want to encourage children to love the library and reading," said Kathy Lane, library program coordinator.
The program allows the participants to choose what books they want to read. The children are able to earn prizes and coupons for each five hours, up to 30 hours they read.
Another component of the program that draws a lot of attention from the children involved in the program are the special guests the library brings in to help motivate kids to read. The library will host its guests at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Rowlett Community Centre, 5300 Main Street.
Among the guests the library will bring in this year include clowns, a juggler, a puppeteer, dancers and a monkey.
"This year we have a world record holder in juggling (David Slick) and a magician that has performed at Caesar's Palace (Jeff Lee)," Lane said. "Having these guests lets [the children] know that the library is for life learning. These performers didn't get where they are without education and it all starts with reading."
The library will host its first guest on Tuesday, June 7, when Ronald McDonald visits the summer reading club participants.
On Wednesday, June 8, Kelly, a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Ambassador of Laughter, makes a special visit the library. The clown is scheduled to perform at 2 p.m. at the library, 3900 Main Street.
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey offers children ages 2 to 12 the opportunity to enroll in its reading program, Reading with Ringling, through the library. By participating in the program children can earn free admission to the circus. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey present BARNUM200 at the American Airlines Center July 27 through Aug. 7 and at the Fort Worth Convention Center from Aug. 10 to 14. The library also expanded its selection of teen programs for the reading program this year. There will be a series of Wednesday activities for teens to take part in including making films and experiencing a traditional Indian dinner.
"It is much bigger than in past years. We wanted to make sure we had something for everyone," Lane said.
The library includes rewards for adults that want to participate. Adults may read books and enter weekly drawings for a $25 gift card from local merchants. They receive one entry for each book read. There will also be a final drawing for $100 worth of books, CDs and DVDs on Aug. 1.
The library will also host movies and popcorn at the library each Thursday at 2 p.m. from June 9 through July 21. Interested participants should pick up a ticket at the library reference desk.
There is a summer reading finale party planned for July 26. The finale will feature a carnival on the library's front lawn with ice pops, popcorn, a petting zoo, face painting, animal balloons, and a 16-foot waterslide.
"I am really excited about the finale. We just had a local business give us 500 packages of cotton candy for it," Lane said.
